JB’s Java Shack

From Shell to Serving: JB’s Java Shack Delivers Big Flavor on a Small Footprint
Java Shack is a revitalization project in Marysville, CA, that transformed a dilapidated commercial property into a streamlined drive-thru coffee operation. The original building was stripped to its structural shell and fully reimagined as a kitchen and prep facility, while a brand-new walk-up and drive-thru coffee shack was constructed in the front parking lot to serve customers efficiently on the go.
The Challenge
The site’s existing structure was outdated and no longer usable in its current form. Lauren needed to rework the entire building envelope—designing a new roof and bringing the shell up to code—while optimizing the front parking lot for a compact coffee shack that could support both vehicle traffic and walk-up foot traffic, all within tight spatial constraints.
Lauren’s Approach
Lauren began by designing a new roof structure and exterior enhancements to convert the old shell into a modern back-of-house prep kitchen. He then developed a site layout and architectural plan for a standalone drive-thru coffee shack at the front of the lot. The new structure was positioned and designed for high traffic flow, easy customer access, and aesthetic cohesion with the remodeled kitchen building. His attention to circulation, signage, and visual branding helped turn the small site into a high-functioning business location.
Result
Result: A fully transformed property blending a clean, code-compliant kitchen facility with a convenient and stylish drive-thru/walk-up coffee shack — creating a destination for daily commuters and locals alike.
