Historic to Housing: HEW Building Transformed for Nevada City’s Future

The HEW Building is an existing historic government structure in Nevada City, CA, now being repurposed into senior and workforce housing. This adaptive reuse project will transform the building into a mix of affordable condos and apartments, addressing the pressing need for accessible housing options in this small mountain community.

The Challenge

Converting a decades-old government facility into modern residential units required overcoming significant design and structural challenges, including ADA accessibility upgrades, outdated utilities, and strict historic preservation requirements mandated by the city.

Lauren’s Approach

Lauren developed adaptive reuse plans that retained the building’s historic character while integrating efficient unit layouts, accessible entrances, and updated mechanical systems. His concept sketches, presentation renderings, and working drawings ensured city planners and community stakeholders could visualize the transformation clearly and approve development phases confidently.

Result

Result:  An innovative housing solution that will provide affordable senior and workforce residences in Nevada City, preserving local history while addressing urgent community housing needs.
